Audio CODEC with a Cap-less Headphone Amp Supports Differential Input/Output Audio4home

Tokyo Japan, Aug 26 2009, Asahi Kasei Microdevices Corporation (AKM) today launched the AK4685, a single chip multifunction audio CODEC with a stereo headphone amplifier. The AK4685 is the newest member of a family of single chip audio CODEC’s for DTV systems that are already widely used in digital televisions, including the AK4683 and AK4682. The AK4685 expands the number of A/D channels to four, enabling higher-quality performance by supporting picture-in-picture functions, as well as providing differential input/output and a stereo capacitor-less headphone amplifier.

The integrated stereo headphone amplifier eliminates the need for large AC-coupling capacitors, reducing cost and saving board space. The differential inputs and outputs cancel noise on analog signal lines, helping to increase the audio performance of the TV set. An analog mute function controlled by pin settings avoids pop noises on power-up or down, even when the power cord is suddenly disconnected. With a 3-port serial audio DSP interface, the 4-channel ADC and 2-channel DAC of the AK4685 can be operated asynchronously.

The AK4685 is available in a 64-pin LQFP package. Evaluation boards and samples are available now. To obtain more information, contact Asahi Kasei Microdevices Corporation, Audio Business Operation, 1-105 Kanda Jinbocho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo 101-8101, Japan or visit our web site “www.akm.com”.
