PRECAUTIONARY NOTES ON USE OF ASACLEAN®

Next

This manual is an overall revision of "ASACLEAN® TECHNICAL INFORMATION"
published in March 1997, incorporating newly obtained data and knowledge. It is
intended to help ASACLEAN® users ensure safe, effective operations for purging and
cleaning of plastics molding machines.

Please read MSDS first.
Before using ASACLEAN®, be sure to consult the relevant material safety data sheet
(MSDS)-available on request from ASACLEAN® distributors or ASAHI KASEI CHEMICALS CORPORATION, its
contact address is as follows.

Never use ASACLEAN® for purposes other than purging and cleaning.

ASACLEAN®, though capable of being molded, is not a molding compound. Do not use
ASACLEAN® moldings as molded products.

Please strictly observe the limit of operating temperatures.
ASACLEAN® has limits of operating temperatures according to types.
We request you to use ASACLEAN® within the range of prescribed temperature.
(1)Below the lower limit of the operating temperature range shown for each type there is a possibility that molding machines are subject to overload.
(2)Over the upper limit of the operating temperature range shown for each type there is a possibility that ASACLEAN® might decompose and ignite.
(3) Do not retain ASACLEAN®, except Type fitting for high temperature applications, at temperatures over 300°C for 30 minutes or more; long retention at such high temperatures will cause ASACLEAN® liquefaction. When the cleaning operation is to be interrupted for 30 minutes or more, turn off the heater or lower the temperature below 300°C and discontinue. ( In case of retention, the upper limit of the high temperature Type ASACLEAN® is 370°C)
Purging is originally very dangerous operation irrespective of using purging compound or not.
(1) Do not revolve the screw when there is no resin in the cylinder.
(2) Even after feeding resin or ASACLEAN® , begin with low revolution speed and then
change to higher speed.
(3) It is dangerous to eliminate resin or ASACLEAN® by injecting operation. Eliminate
them by applying back-pressure while revolving the screw. In case discharging with
injecting operation, it is recommendable to carry out inching.
Be sure to always replace ASACLEAN® with the next molding material.
(1) After purging with ASACLEAN®, it must be replaced with the material to be molded
next.
NOTE: Insufficient replacement may adversely affect the properties of molded products. And after purging with ASACLEAN®, cleaning the hopper interior using a vacuum cleaner, etc. should be done.
(2) When replacing ASACLEAN®, the following should be complied with.
- Use the molding temperature of the next molding material, as a general rule.
- Replace ASACLEAN® completely by the next molding material.
- Be sure to ascertain, by trial molding, that the appearance and other qualities of
moldings of the next material are satisfactory.
(3) In cases where the next molding material is nylon or polyacetal, especially careful
ASACLEAN® replacement is necessary.
(4) Molded products and runners that were used for trial molding are requested not to
return to molding materials.
Other important Considerations:
(1) Safety and Personal Protection
During cleaning operations, wear protective gear (e.g. safety glasses, gloves) to avoid thermal burns to eyes, face, and skin and other injuries. Provision of local ventilation is also recommended. If area is not adequately ventilated, wear appropriate NIOSA and OSHA approved ventilation gear.
(2) Disposal
Except for inorganic-filled grades, ASACLEAN® may be disposed of by landfill or incineration. In either case, be sure to comply with federal, state, and local requirements. Do not dump into sewers, on the ground, or into any body of water.
Inorganic-filled grades should only be disposed of by landfill, as their incineration leaves considerable amounts of residue (inorganic filler).

In case of the Type specific for high temperature use

1. Beware of operating temperature (set up cylinder temperature)
(1)About the upper limit of the operating temperature range
The high temperature type will liquefy over 390°C. Besides, it will decompose in the
air, so it may ignite when there is a source of fire. It is recommended, therefore, to
use the type under 390°C. Do not retain the type at temperatures over 370°C in the
cylinder. It is recommended to lower the temperature to 370°C or less while purging
with the high temperature type or to replace the type with the molding material to be run next, before stopping injection.

(2)About the lower limit of the operating temperature range
Since the type is specific for high temperature operation, using over 300°C is recommended.
Use of the type below 300°C may result in a motor overload of the molding machine.
In case molding under 300°C after purging with the high temperature type, replace it with Type U between 300 and 360°C and then lower the temperature as low as below 300°C.
2. About the standard use method
(1)While revolving the screw at the furthest forward position, discharge as much of the
previous resin as possible by applying back pressure.
(2)Set the cylinder temperature below 390°C (and over 300°C).
(3)Clean the hopper interior by air blast and feed the amount required of the high temperature type through the hopper.
(4)Discharge entirely the high temperature type while revolving the screw at the furthest
forward position with back pressure.

Notice (relating with next molding)

1.In case molding temperatures exceed 390°C after purging with the high temperature type
Soon after finishing discharge of high temperature type, feed resin to be molded next and discharge the entire high temperature type by applying back pressure.
Set the temperature over 390°C after the inside of the cylinder has been replaced with next resin only.

2.In case molding machine stops operation after purging with the high temperature type
Lower the temperature down to 370°C while discharging the high temperature type.
When the temperature becomes below 370°C, feed additionally the high temperature type through the hopper and fill the inside of the cylinder with the high temperature type.
Then, turn off the heater. (Cut off air to prevent from degradation of the high temperature type.) In case restart-up molding machine which has been purged with the high temperature type and stopped, confirm that the temperature of the high temperature type in the cylinder increases enough by heat. In case temperature increases over 370°C, increase temperatures either discharging the high temperature type with back pressure or after replacing with next molding resin.

3. Other notices

(1)Since the high temperature type emits white fumes during use, provide local ventilation or otherwise improve air circulation adequately during the use of the high temperature type.
(2)Provide a container filled with water by the side of a molding machine and cool purged scraps with high temperature.
(3)If purged scraps, at high temperature, are received with paper or discarded into a paper bag, such paper is feared to ignite. Therefore, discard such scraps after well being cooled.
