Agreement to license cyclohexanol technology
|
Asahi Kasei Chemicals Corp. (AKCC) has concluded an agreement to license its
cyclohexanol process to Shijiazhuang Coking & Chemical Group Co., Ltd. (SCCG)
of China. SCCG will construct a 100,000 ton/year plant using this technology
in a chemical industrial park in Shijiazhuang City, Hebei Province, approximately
280 km southwest of Beijing, with start-up scheduled for autumn 2007.
Cyclohexanol is a feedstock for the production of adipic acid, an intermediate
for nylon 66 and polyurethane, and of caprolactam, an intermediate for nylon
6. The AKCC cyclohexanol process via cyclohexene, using benzene as initial feedstock,
was developed to heighten the competitiveness of AKCC’s nylon 66 operations.
The process features outstanding economic efficiency and environmental compatibility
with extremely low waste generation. It has been used commercially at the Mizushima
Works of AKCC since 1990, and after successive plant expansions capacity now
stands at 170,000 tons/year.
SCCG’s business operations are centered on coke and byproducts of coke
production, including benzene. It sought to utilize its benzene to produce cyclohexanone
to supply to a caprolactam plant planned by Shijiazhuang Chemical Fibre Co.,
Ltd., a Sinopec Group company. Cyclohexanone is obtained by dehydrogenation of
cyclohexanol. The AKCC cyclohexanol process via cyclohexene was selected in recognition
of its excellent technological merits and record of performance in commercial
operation.
