Petrochemicals and derivative products operations centered on a naphtha cracker form the cornerstone of our chemicals business. The roots of this business trace to 1923, with ammonia synthesis by the Casale process. Products that support a diverse range of industries now include caustic soda and chlorine by electrolysis, as well as petrochemical products such as acrylonitrile (AN), styrene, methyl methacrylate, adipic acid, polyethylene, synthetic rubber, and elastomers.
This business includes high-volume polymer materials such as acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) and polystyrene (PS), engineering polymers such as polyacetal (POM), modified polyphenylene ether (m-PPE), and polyamide 66 (PA66), as well as molding machine purging compound. Packaging products range from home-use cling wrap to plastic films and foams for industrial use.
Many high-value added products and systems are included in this business, such as a wide range of coating materials to meet diverse market needs, functional additives for pharmaceuticals, foods, and personal care products, membrane filtration systems for drinking water, ultrapure water, and wastewater treatment, ion-exchange membranes and systems used for chlor-alkali production worldwide, and explosives and explosion-bonded metal clad.
With reliable technology and high product quality, Roica™ elastic polyurethane filament (spandex/elastane) provides the advanced functionality to meet a wide variety of customer needs. It is used for women’s stockings, innerwear, swimwear and other sportswear, diapers, and medical supporters. The global Roica™ supply network includes manufacturing plants in Japan, Taiwan, China, Thailand, the US, and Germany.
Bemberg™ is eco-friendly fibers made from cotton linter—the short, downy fiber that enfolds and protects the cotton seed—featuring a smooth feel, attractive luster, and moisture absorption/release. Made by Asahi Kasei Fibers since 1931, Bemberg™ is used in applications ranging from linings to outerwear, innerwear, sportswear, beddings, and ethnic garments.
Our wide range of highly functional nonwoven products are made with advanced and innovative production technology. Eltas™ spunbond, a nonwoven fabric formed by thermal compression without the use of any binders, is the world’s only spunbond available in three different materials – nylon, polyester, and polypropylene. The ecological Bemliese™ is a binder-free, 100% cellulose cupro nonwoven made from cotton linter. Lamous™ artificial suede is used for upholstery and automotive interiors.
Leona™ nylon 66 filament featuring exceptional strength, heat resistance, and durability, is used for tire cord, air bags, and other applications in every field of industry. It is produced in an efficient integrated manufacturing process, and enables weight saving in many products.
