What is Spandex?

Spandex-The Essentilals

Spandex is known by various names.  in the context of product quality regulation in Japan.
It is referred to as polyurethane.  in many countries in Europe, it is commonly known as elastane fiber, which shares its word origins with the term"elastic".

Like rubber, spandex is an elastic material.  It is in fact more elastic than rubber, and several times higher in tensile strenght.  It is also lighter in weight.

Spandex can be produced in extremely fine to coarse deniers that are difficult or impossible for rubber.  The three basic categories of spandex production are dry spinning, wet spinning, and melt spinning.
Dry spinning is the most widely used, and is the production method for Roica

Spandex is a highly versatile fiber.  It can be readily blended with either synthetic or natural fibers, ranging from nylon and polyester to cotton and wool, to obtain fabrics and apparel with outstanding function and quality.

The fields of spandex applications are broad and growing.
Main applications today are : innerwear, outerwear, sportswear, other apparel, hosiery, shoesoles, upholsteries, medical supporters, tapes and gauzes.

ROICA is a trademark of ASAHI KASEI FIBERS CORPORATION for spandex / elastane fiber.
