| Characteristics of acetonitrile |
- Acetonitrile is a colorless liquid. It is completely miscible with water and alcohols. Its high dipole moment makes it an excellent solvent for many organic compounds as wellas some inorganic compounds.
- Acetonitrile is chemically stable and is a strong solvent. It is mainly used for the synthesis of organic compounds, and is suitable for electrical-chemical reaction and nonaqueous titration. Acetonitrile easily solvates with cations and enhances the reactivity of anions.
- As with other nitrile compounds, the reactivity of acetonitrile's cyano group enables the production of many nitrogen-containing organic intermediates.

| Care in handling |
For the safe handling of acetonitrile, please be sure to read the Material Safety Data Sheet issued by Asahi Kasei Chemicals before use. The main points for the safe handling of acetonitrile are as follows :
- Flammability
| Data |
Flash point (TCC): 8.0°C Flammable limits: 3 to 16 vol.% |
| Care in handling |
Due to its flammability, acetonitrile should be stored well below the flash point
temperature and handled in a well ventilated place.
It should be kept away from open flame. Associated fires can be extinguished
effectively by using dry chemical powder, foam, carbon dioxide, or water spray. |
- Toxicity
| Toxicity symptoms |
By skin absorption, acetonitrile will cause slight anesthetic effects. Inhalation of
high concentration of acetonitrile will cause nausea and breathing difficulty. |
| First aid treatment |
Skin contact: Flush with plenty of water and cleanse with soap.
Eye contact: Thoroughly flush with water and get medical attention.
Inhalation: Take deep breaths of fresh air and seek medical attention. |
| Care in handling |
Handle in well ventilated areas and wear rubber gloves and protective goggles. |
| TLV (ACGIH) |
TLVs 20 ppm (2003) |
| Acute toxicity |
LD50 (50% oral lethal dose) 3,800 mg/kg for rat |
- Compliance with regulations
| Please comply with regulations of your country. |
