Effect of the Great East Japan Earthquake on the Asahi Kasei Group

The Asahi Kasei Group expresses its sincere sympathy to all those affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. It is our genuine hope that the afflicted areas will be restored and revitalized as soon as possible.

As a follow-up on our announcement of April 14, 2011, regarding the outlook for resumption of operation at damaged plants, we hereby provide notification of their current status.

1. Current status of the plants

1) Asahi Kasei Power Devices Corp. Ishinomaki Plant (Miyagi Prefecture)

The Ishinomaki Plant partially resumed production on April 11. As a result of subsequent repair work on manufacturing equipment etc., the plant has been in normal operation since early May.

2) Asahi Kasei Construction Materials Corp. Neoma Foam Plant (Ibaraki Prefecture)

The Neoma Foam Plant partially resumed production on April 11. As a result of subsequent repair work on manufacturing equipment etc., the plant has been in normal operation since late April.

3) Asahi Kasei Metals Ltd. Tomobe Plant (Ibaraki Prefecture)

Repair work has progressed on the partially damaged manufacturing equipment, and the plant partially resumed production in early May. Other operations are to be resumed in succession, with full operation slated for mid-June.

Note: As announced in our release “Effect of the Great East Japan Earthquake on the Asahi Kasei Group (4th announcement)” dated on April 14, 2011, Asahi Kasei Construction Materials Corp. Sakai Plant (Ibaraki Prefecture) had already resumed normal operation.

2. Impact on financial performance

The impact of this earthquake on fiscal 2010 consolidated financial results of the Asahi Kasei Group will be disclosed with the May 11, 2011, financial results announcement.
