Enhancing the visual experience of AR/VR

With its low birefringence, AZP™ optical resin from Asahi Kasei enhances the visual experience of AR/VR devices. As a substitute for glass, it also contributes to the smaller size and lighter weight of devices.

AR/VR industry

New possibilities for immersive experience

As AR and VR applications rapidly expand, users seek more immersive experience. A deep sense of immersion is enhanced by improving the image quality and reducing the size and weight of the device. By contributing to the advancement of such aspects, AZP™ enables a richer AR/VR experience.

New possibilities for immersive experience

Visual experience without distortion

Although higher image quality is needed to achieve immersive experience, lenses made of conventional optical resins tend to have issues such as image degradation and color bleeding due to birefringence. Such issues are increasingly problematic as visuals become more realistic. With its outstanding low birefringence, AZP™ enables sharp and clear images in fine detail, providing high passthrough for realistic high-resolution graphics.

This allows users to enjoy a wide range of digital content with unprecedented quality, including games, live events, sporting events, social interactions, and even precise industrial procedures.

VR headset lenses made with AZP™ provide a clear image, shown at left, compared to VR headset lenses made with cyclic olefin polymer (COP) which exhibit ghosting and flaring, shown at right.

Comfort even for prolonged use

Lighter AR/VR devices could be worn for longer without causing head or neck fatigue. Although its birefringence is comparable to glass, the specific gravity of AZP™ is less than half. This makes it possible to reduce the weight of AR/VR devices.

New possibilities through miniaturization

Miniaturization is especially important in VR devices optimized for gaming and interactive experience. By using AZP™ for pancake lenses in a polarization-based optical folding system, the field of view can be broadened even as the device is made more compact. This allows users more freedom of movement and a richer experience. Furthermore, miniaturization makes the device more portable and easier to store.

In comparison with conventional VR devices, shown at left, thickness can be reduced with the optical system using pancake lenses, shown at right.

Compatible with antireflective coating

Antireflective coating is often applied to lenses of VR headsets in order to prevent diminished visibility due to surface reflection. AZP™ is also compatible with antireflective coating. If requested, we can recommend coating companies to you.

Reasons to Choose AZP™

AZP™ from Asahi Kasei is a completely new optical resin with almost no birefringence. It enables a vivid and clear visual experience, along with light weight, small size, and high flexibility in design that cannot be obtained with conventional resins or glass.
