Expanding the possibilities of next-generation mobility

With excellent low birefringence, light resistance, and heat resistance, AZP™ optical resin from Asahi Kasei expands possibilities for the performance and design of optical components in next-generation mobility.

Supporting the evolution of next-generation mobility

With its low birefringence, AZP™ optical resin from Asahi Kasei provides clear, vivid images in heads-up displays (HUDs) without loss of light. Furthermore, its superior light resistance and heat resistance allow it to maintain the shape and good appearance of products over time. Being injection-moldable, AZP™ also enables larger and curved automotive interior displays.

Clear display in bright environments

HUDs are increasingly used to promptly convey essential information to drivers. Visibility is reduced, however, if light is lost through polarization distortion due to birefringence in lenses and other optical components. With its exceptional low birefringence, AZP™ preserves polarization and maintains light intensity, ensuring clear and readable displays even in bright daylight.

Clear display in bright environments

Clear visibility with polarized sunglasses

With displays made using conventional transparent resins, birefringence causes diminished visibility when viewed wearing polarized sunglasses. Having superior low birefringence, AZP™ allows clear visibility even with polarized sunglasses.

Comparison of display visibility when viewed through polarized sunglasses: When a sheet of polycarbonate (PC) is placed on the display, birefringence causes rainbow patterns to appear. When a sheet of AZP™ is used, no such rainbow patterns are seen.

Maintaining quality in high-temperature environments

Dashboards and heads-up displays (HUDs) are frequently exposed to high-temperature environments as sunlight causes heat to accumulate within vehicles. Furthermore, the increasing brightness of modern LED headlamps requires inner lenses to have high heat resistance. With its superior heat resistance and excellent shape stability under high temperatures, AZP™ is well suited for vehicle components that are exposed to high heat.

Maintaining pristine appearance without fading or yellowing

Long-term exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet rays may cause fading or yellowing of products made with conventional transparent resins, impairing both their appearance and functionality. With its superior light resistance, AZP™ maintains a pristine appearance even in demanding applications such as display covers and headlamps.

Realizing larger and curved displays

Demand for larger and curved displays in vehicle interiors has risen in recent years. This will require display covers to have a high degree of design flexibility, which is limited with conventional glass covers. Being injection-moldable, AZP™ allows for versatile shape design, enabling the creation of uniquely shaped displays that were previously unattainable.
