Maintaining the Impact Strength of PC/ABS Alloy at a High Level

Asahi Kasei’s synthetic rubber is available in grades with reduced metal residues as a raw material for mass ABS for polycarbonate (PC) alloys. It prevents the degradation of impact strength and strength of the alloy caused by PC decomposition due to metal residues, and suppresses deformation of molded products.

Suppressing Impact Strength Degradation of PC/ABS Alloy by Reducing Metal Residues

Mass ABS and polycarbonate (PC) may be alloyed to improve heat resistance, flame retardancy, and injection moldability. However, conventionally, synthetic rubber, which is a raw material for ABS, contains metals due to the influence of raw materials, and when alloyed with PC, the metal residues can decompose the PC, leading to a decrease in impact strength.

Asahi Kasei’s synthetic rubber has grades with metal residues removed from raw materials. Mass ABS using this grade as a raw material can achieve an alloy with excellent impact strength because it reduces metal residues, preventing PC decomposition when alloyed with PC.

Providing High-Quality Products with Very Low Impurities and Gel

Generally, the quality of synthetic rubber is influenced by the presence of impurities and gel. If impurities are present, unexpected reactions can occur, resulting in unstable physical properties or discoloration. If gel is present, the desired physical properties may not be obtained, leading to problems such as poor appearance.

Asahi Kasei’s Low-cis Polybutadiene Rubber used for PC/ABS alloy applications is produced by solution polymerization. Therefore, it is a high-quality product that is colorless, has few impurities, and has very little gel that is insoluble in styrene, which can suppress problems such as physical properties and appearance.

It also excels in cold flow resistance and can maintain the shape of the bale for a long time.
